The teaching of maths at Heath Primary School fits with the school’s philosophy of empowering learners. The children are encouraged to take ownership of their learning through choosing the challenges that will advance their understanding of a subject matter. Developing a ‘growth mindset’ runs through the school, meaning that there is an emphasis on effort and the idea that there is no limit on what a child can achieve. Mathematics is integral to all aspects of life and, with this in mind, we endeavour to ensure that children develop a positive and enthusiastic attitude towards mathematics that will stay with them. The teaching of maths should be linked to real-life contexts that make it relevant to the children and help prepare them to apply the skills learnt, such as logical thinking, problem solving and reasoning, in the world beyond school. Qualities such as resilience, curiosity and risk taking are vital to developing forward thinking mathematicians and successful learners. These link to the school’s ‘Learning Powers’ and feature in maths lessons across the school.
